Gun Rights Restoration in Texas: The Federal Program Is Live Today

meyerscriminallaw1

Today is the day for gun rights restoration in Texas. DOJ’s Federal Firearm Rights Restoration rule officially takes effect, and the clock is now running on a rollout that decides who gets a fair shot at getting their gun rights back and who has to wait.

We discussed this new DOJ policy previously, but the day is finally here! /blog/gun-rights-restoration-in-texas/

What’s Happening, and When

  • Today — the rule takes effect
  • September 25 — the application opens to DOJ-invited candidates only
  • November 4 — the application opens to the public, capped at the first 5,000 people to apply, first come, first served
  • January 4, 2027 — 500 more slots open, and the $30 application fee begins

Why Today Actually Matters

  • November 4 isn’t a soft deadline. DOJ has confirmed it’s a hard, first-come, first-served cap — once those 5,000 spots fill, the next chance doesn’t come until January, for only 500 more people
  • Getting in the door fast matters more than most people realize, but the underlying paperwork still decides whether the application succeeds once you’re in
  • Certified judgments, proof of sentence completion, a decades-back criminal history report, and vetted character references all take real time to gather — time you don’t have if you start on November 3

Start Now, Not November 4

If you have an old felony conviction and you’ve been told you can’t legally own a firearm, gun rights restoration in Texas is finally a real possibility at the federal level for the first time in over 30 years. But being ready before the window opens is what actually determines whether this rule helps you or passes you by.
